This medication is used to help patients with Type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels. It can be used alone or in combination with other diabetes medications for those who find it difficult to control blood sugar levels while following a diet and exercise program. For instance, this medication may be administered if prior diabetes medications have not been used or if blood sugar control is insufficient with monotherapy using metformin or sitagliptin. Additionally, it can be used in conjunction with metformin when combination therapy with sulfonylureas or thiazolidinediones fails to yield adequate results. It is also used alongside insulin when blood sugar control is difficult with the combination of insulin and metformin. Ultimately, this medication assists in improving blood sugar control under a variety of diabetes treatment conditions.

Precautions

This medication contains sitagliptin and metformin, which are used for diabetes treatment. First, sitagliptin may rarely cause serious allergic reactions, so if symptoms such as skin rash or difficulty breathing occur, the medication must be discontinued immediately and a doctor should be consulted. Also, pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas, may occur, so if symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, or loss of appetite arise, medical personnel should be notified immediately. Metformin may cause a rare complication known as lactic acidosis, which can manifest as muscle pain, difficulty breathing, fatigue, and abdominal pain; in this case, medication use should be stopped immediately and hospitalization is necessary. This medication should not be administered to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, acute infections, heart failure, or acute myocardial infarction. Additionally, patients scheduled for radiographic contrast studies should stop taking this medication 48 hours prior to the test and resume only after confirming normal renal function. It is not to be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women, or in individuals under 18 years of age. In elderly patients, renal function may decline; thus, dosage adjustments and regular renal function tests are necessary. During treatment with this medication, excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided, and care should be taken for the risk of hypoglycemia during irregular meals or strenuous exercise. Moreover, when combined with other hypoglycemic agents, there may be hypoglycemic symptoms, so attention to symptoms and dosage adjustments may be necessary if needed. Prior to surgery, this medication should be temporarily discontinued and resumed only after confirming normal renal function post-surgery. If severe joint pain or skin vesicles occur during treatment, the doctor should be informed immediately, and medication discontinuation may be necessary in such cases. Regular blood tests and renal function tests are crucial for early detection and management of adverse reactions.
