Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to help patients with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar levels. It is beneficial for patients who have not previously received diabetes medication or have difficulty controlling blood sugar levels with monotherapy. Additionally, it may be utilized when monotherapy with metformin or sitagliptin is not sufficiently effective or when replacing combination therapy of both drugs. This medication can also be added as a complementary treatment when blood sugar control is inadequate during combination therapy with metformin and sulfonylureas or metformin and thiazolidinediones. When used in conjunction with insulin and if blood sugar control is challenging, this medication can be added to enhance the therapeutic effect. This multifaceted therapeutic approach improves blood sugar control.

There is also a risk of serious inflammation of the pancreas called acute pancreatitis; thus, inform medical professionals immediately if symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, or nausea occur. This medication should not be administered to patients with severe renal impairment or those with acute heart failure, severe infections, or dehydration. Additionally, it should be temporarily discontinued before and after tests using iodinated contrast media. It is safest for pregnant women or those who are breastfeeding not to use this medication. This medication can cause lactic acidosis, which is rare but very serious, so if symptoms such as muscle pain, difficulty breathing, or weakness occur, visit the hospital immediately. While taking this medication, it is important to regularly monitor kidney function and blood tests to detect any abnormalities. This medication can induce hypoglycemia, so caution should be exercised during meals or increased physical activity, and the risk of hypoglycemia may be heightened when taken with other hypoglycemic agents. Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so avoid drinking during treatment with this medication. In cases of surgery or severe illness, this medication should be temporarily discontinued, and resumed once the patient is stabilized. Patients taking this medication should consult a doctor immediately if blisters on the skin or severe joint pain occur.
