Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty controlling blood sugar
View approved original text

This medicine is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes when used in conjunction with diet and exercise. It is particularly prescribed for patients who have not previously received diabetes medication and find it difficult to control blood sugar with monotherapy. Furthermore, if blood sugar control is insufficient with monotherapy using metformin or sitagliptin, this medicine can provide more effective management. For patients who are already having difficulty managing blood sugar with a combination of metformin and sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin, this medicine can enhance treatment efficacy when used in combination. In summary, this medicine improves blood sugar control when used alone or in combination with various diabetes medications.

Precautions

This medicine contains two ingredients: sitagliptin and metformin, which are antidiabetic agents. First, serious allergic reactions may occur during treatment with this medicine; therefore, discontinue use immediately and inform medical staff if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur. Second, pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, can occur rarely; therefore, if symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or fever arise, visit a hospital immediately. Third, due to the metformin component, lactic acidosis, a rare but potentially fatal metabolic disorder, can occur; hence, inform medical personnel immediately if sudden fatigue, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, or abdominal pain occurs. Fourth, this medicine should not be used by patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, acute heart failure, severe infections, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Fifth, regular monitoring of renal function and blood tests is required while using this medicine, especially in elderly patients or those with weakened renal function. Sixth, this medicine may cause hypoglycemia; caution should be taken when skipping meals or engaging in strenuous exercise, as the risk of hypoglycemia may increase when taken with other hypoglycemic agents. Seventh, alcohol consumption can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it is advisable to avoid drinking while taking this medication. Eighth, patients scheduled for surgery should discontinue this medicine 48 hours before surgery and may resume use after renal function is confirmed to be normal post-surgery. Ninth, if blisters or severe joint pain occur while taking this medicine, notify medical staff immediately. Finally, the safety and efficacy of this medicine in children and adolescents have not been established, so it should not be used in these populations.
