Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is helpful when initial monotherapy is insufficient to control blood sugar in newly treated diabetes patients. This medication can also be substituted or used in combination when metformin or sitagliptin monotherapy is inadequate. It may be combined when combinations such as metformin with sulfonylureas or metformin with thiazolidinediones are ineffective. Additionally, for patients who find it difficult to control blood sugar while on insulin and metformin, this medication can be added to enhance therapeutic efficacy. It is used in the previously mentioned scenarios to improve blood sugar control.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is generally taken twice a day with food, with gradual dose escalation to reduce gastrointestinal side effects from metformin. 1. Patients currently not receiving metformin: Start with an initial dose of 50/500 mg twice daily, taking 1 tablet per dose, with potential escalation to 50/1000 mg. 2. Precautions

This medication contains sitagliptin and metformin, and is used in diabetes treatment. First, during the administration of this medication, severe allergic reactions may occur, so if symptoms such as rash, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck arise, you should stop taking the medication immediately and inform a healthcare professional. Furthermore, there is a risk of developing acute pancreatitis, a serious inflammation of the pancreas, so symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever should be closely monitored, and if suspected, consult a doctor immediately. Metformin, one of the ingredients in this medication, can rarely provoke a serious metabolic disorder called lactic acidosis, which may manifest as muscle pain, difficulty breathing, weakness, and abdominal pain. If these symptoms appear, you must stop taking the medication immediately and seek emergency treatment. Patients with severely impaired kidney function, acute cardiac failure, severe infection, or dehydration should not take this medication and should discontinue it before and after examinations using contrast media containing iodine. It is safer not to use this medication in pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, or in nursing mothers. During the course of treatment, symptoms of hypoglycemia may occur, so especially when taken with other hypoglycemic agents or insulin, blood sugar levels should be monitored frequently and attention should be paid to symptoms of hypoglycemia. Additionally, there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia during intense exercise, irregular meals, or poor nutritional status, so caution is needed. Regular monitoring of liver and kidney function during treatment is necessary to ensure there are no abnormalities, and since vitamin B12 deficiency may occur, it is advisable to periodically check vitamin levels. Alcohol consumption may increase risks when taken with this medication, so it is preferable to avoid alcohol. During states where oral ingestion is difficult due to surgery, severe infection, or significant trauma, temporarily discontinuing this medication and restarting it after recovery is necessary. Finally, joint pain, skin rash, or blistering skin diseases may develop during treatment, so if such symptoms appear, consult a physician.
