Efficacy & effects

Improves blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood sugar control
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone, especially in cases where patients have not been treated with blood sugar control medications previously. This drug is also used when blood sugar control is difficult with either metformin or sitagliptin monotherapy, or when replacing the combination of both drugs. In addition, if there is no effect with combination therapy of metformin and sulfonylurea, or metformin and thiazolidinedione, this medication can be used in combination to enhance therapeutic effects. It also improves blood sugar control when used together with insulin and metformin in cases where blood sugar control is insufficient. Therefore, it is used as an effective adjunct in various therapeutic situations for blood sugar control.

Precautions

This medication contains sitagliptin and metformin, which require caution during use. First, this medication may cause allergic reactions, so if symptoms like hives, rash, or difficulty breathing occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. There is a risk of acute pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas, so be vigilant for symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, and stop taking the medication right away if suspected. Moreover, this medication should not be administered to patients with severe renal impairment, acute heart failure, or myocardial infarction, and it should be temporarily stopped before and after surgeries or examinations using radioactive iodine contrast agents. It is advisable not to use it in pregnant or breastfeeding women or in children and adolescents under 18 years of age, as safety has not been established. Regular monitoring of renal function is necessary while on this medication, especially for the elderly or patients with weakened kidney function. Additionally, this medication may cause hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels should be carefully monitored in cases of irregular meal patterns, vigorous exercise, or when taken with other blood sugar-lowering agents. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so excessive drinking should be avoided, and symptoms like malaise, muscle pain, respiratory distress, and abdominal pain should be reported to medical personnel immediately. During the course of this medication, rare side effects like severe joint pain or bullous pemphigoid may occur; if these symptoms occur, inform a doctor immediately. Finally, this medication may interact with various drugs, so if other medications are being taken, it is essential to consult with a physician or pharmacist, particularly when using drugs that might affect kidney function.
