Improvement in blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to more effectively control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is especially administered as an adjunct when blood sugar control is difficult with diet and exercise alone. It can be used in patients who have no prior experience with diabetic drug therapy or when monotherapy is insufficient. Additionally, it is administered when blood sugar control is inadequate with either metformin or sitagliptin monotherapy, or to replace the combination therapy with these two medications. In cases where blood sugar control is challenging, it may be combined with sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, insulin, etc. to enhance treatment efficacy. In summary, this medication effectively improves blood sugar control when used alone or in combination with various diabetes treatments.
This medication is generally taken twice daily with food, gradually increasing the dosage to minimize gastrointestinal adverse reactions caused by metformin. 1. For patients not treated with metformin: The initial dosage is this medication 50/500 mg taken twice daily, 1 tablet per dose, and may be increased to 50/1000 mg taken twice daily, 1 tablet per dose if necessary. 2. For patients treated with metformin: The recommended initial dosage of this medication for those unable to achieve sufficient blood sugar control with metformin monotherapy is sitagliptin 50 mg twice daily (total daily amount 100 mg) along with the existing metformin dosage.
This medication contains sitagliptin and metformin, which help in blood sugar control. There are several precautions to be aware of: First, since there is a risk of hypersensitivity, if symptoms like skin rash, urticaria, or breathlessness occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor. Secondly, there is a risk of acute pancreatitis; therefore, if symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting occur, inform a doctor immediately. Thirdly, due to the metformin component, there is a rare but potentially fatal side effect called lactic acidosis, so if sudden onset breathlessness, muscle pain, fatigue, or abdominal pain occurs, seek treatment immediately. Fourthly, patients with poor kidney function or those experiencing severe infections or dehydration should not take this medication. Fifthly, this medication should be temporarily discontinued prior to examinations using iodine contrast agents, and can be resumed only after confirming normal kidney function after the examination. Sixthly, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication. Seventhly, this medication can cause hypoglycemia; therefore, caution should be exercised with irregular meals or vigorous exercise, and patients should closely monitor their blood sugar levels when taken together with other hypoglycemic agents as hypoglycemia symptoms may be more pronounced. Eighthly, patients with liver dysfunction should also avoid taking this medicine and should have regular blood tests and kidney function tests. Lastly, excessive alcohol intake during treatment should be avoided as it may increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
