Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to assist with blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy. It may help patients using diabetes medications for the first time who find it difficult to achieve blood sugar control with monotherapy. It is also used when the effects of metformin or sitagliptin, when used alone, are insufficient, or when replacing combination therapy with these two medications. If blood sugar is not adequately controlled, it can be administered in combination with other medications such as sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin for more effective blood sugar management. In various treatment settings, this medication helps improve patients' blood sugar control.

This medication is typically prescribed to be taken twice daily with food, with gradual dosage increments to minimize gastrointestinal side effects related to metformin. 1. Patients not currently undergoing treatment with metformin: - Initial dose is 1 tablet of this medication 50/500 mg taken twice daily. - Upon dose escalation, 1 tablet of this medication 50/1000 mg taken twice daily. 2. Precautions

This medication contains sitagliptin and metformin and is used for diabetes treatment. Firstly, severe allergic reactions may occur while taking this medication, so if symptoms such as skin rash, hives, or difficulty breathing occur, stop taking it immediately and consult a doctor. There have been reports of serious side effects such as acute pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas, so if abdominal pain, vomiting, or loss of appetite occurs after taking it, inform a healthcare professional immediately. The metformin component can rarely cause a serious metabolic disorder known as lactic acidosis, which may present with symptoms such as muscle pain, difficulty breathing, weakness, or abdominal pain, thus caution is required. Patients with renal impairment, dehydration, severe infections, or acute renal failure, conditions affecting the kidneys, should not use this medication, and especially before and after undergoing tests involving iodinated contrast agents, it must be discontinued. This medication is not to be administered to pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, breastfeeding mothers, or children and adolescents under 18 years of age. During the course of therapy, regular monitoring of kidney function and blood tests should be conducted, and particular caution is warranted in the elderly due to the risk of kidney function decline. Additionally, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, so careful monitoring of blood sugar changes is essential when eating irregularly, engaging in vigorous exercise, or combining with other hypoglycemic agents. Excessive alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it is advised to refrain from drinking during treatment. This medication should be temporarily discontinued before and after surgical procedures, and if sudden symptoms or abnormalities occur while taking it, consult a healthcare professional immediately.
