Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. Initially, it is administered when it is difficult for patients who are starting diabetes medications to control blood sugar with monotherapy. It is also used as an alternative treatment for those who have not achieved sufficient blood sugar control with metformin or sitagliptin alone, or for those who have been using both medications together. When blood sugar control is still insufficient after combination therapy with metformin and sulfonylurea, or after combination therapy with metformin and thiazolidinediones, this medication is added to improve therapeutic effect. In cases where the combination of insulin and metformin is insufficient, this medication assists in blood sugar management. Thus, this medication is used to improve blood sugar control in various cases.

Precautions

This medication can cause severe allergic reactions, although rare, so if symptoms such as rash or difficulty breathing occur, it should be discontinued immediately and a doctor should be consulted. Also, as pancreatitis, a condition characterized by inflammation of the pancreas, may occur, patients should visit the hospital immediately if symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or fever appear after taking the medication. This medication should not be administered to patients with significantly impaired renal function, acute heart failure, severe infection, or dehydration; it should also be temporarily discontinued before and after surgery. Patients with poor liver function, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, should not use this medication for safety reasons. While taking this medication, patients should be cautious of symptoms of hypoglycemia, especially when taken in conjunction with other hypoglycemic agents, as the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, necessitating frequent blood sugar checks and immediate action upon symptom onset. This medication may commonly cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, so it is advisable to consult a doctor if these symptoms are severe. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, a side effect of this medication, so excessive drinking should be avoided during use. Additionally, regular kidney function and blood tests should be conducted to monitor the patient's condition, and vitamin B12 levels may decrease, so supplementation may be necessary if required. If sudden weight loss, decreased appetite, joint pain, rash, or blistering skin conditions occur during treatment with this medication, patients should inform their healthcare provider immediately. Lastly, when administering this medication to the elderly, careful monitoring of renal function should be conducted, and it is safest to start at the minimum dose.
