Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty controlling blood sugar
View approved original text

This medication is used to help control blood sugar along with diet and exercise in patients with type 2 diabetes. It may be prescribed when previous diabetes medication treatment has not been received or when blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy. It is also used when metformin or sitagliptin alone is insufficient or as a substitute for a treatment involving both medications. In cases where blood sugar control is difficult with a combination therapy of metformin and sulfonylureas, or metformin and thiazolidinediones, this medication is added for combination treatment. If dual therapy with insulin and metformin is insufficient, it can also be used to improve blood sugar control. It effectively assists in blood sugar control through various stages of treatment.

Precautions

This medication contains sitagliptin and metformin and is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. First of all, allergic reactions such as rash may occur while taking this medication; if any allergic symptoms or skin rash appear, stop taking it immediately and consult your physician. This medication may induce acute pancreatitis, so if you experience abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting following its use, inform your medical staff immediately. In addition, metformin ingredients can cause a serious metabolic disturbance known as lactic acidosis, so patients with impaired renal function or liver dysfunction should not use this medication and should undergo regular kidney function tests. This medication carries a risk of hypoglycemia; caution is advised in case of irregular meals, intense exercise, or concomitant use with other hypoglycemic agents. Particularly, it should not be administered to patients with reduced kidney function, dehydration, severe infections, heart failure, or unstable conditions such as acute myocardial infarction. Administration of this medication should be temporarily suspended before and after tests using iodinated contrast agents, and then resumed only after confirming normal kidney function. Pregnant or breastfeeding women and children and adolescents under 18 should avoid taking this medication. Elderly patients may have reduced kidney function, so dosage adjustment and regular monitoring of kidney function are necessary. It is recommended to avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication and to stop temporarily before and after surgery. Additionally, this medication may interact with other drugs, so if you are taking other medications, be sure to inform your healthcare provider. During treatment, side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, headache, and upper respiratory infections may occur, and if symptoms are severe, consult your healthcare provider.
