View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy to assist in controlling blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is effective for patients starting treatment who cannot achieve adequate blood sugar control with monotherapy. This medication can be used when monotherapy with either metformin or sitagliptin is insufficient, or when replacing combination therapy of both drugs. Moreover, it can be administered in conjunction when blood sugar control is inadequate with metformin combined with sulfonylurea or metformin with thiazolidinedione. This medication can also be added to insulin therapy when used in conjunction with metformin does not provide sufficient control. Overall, this medication helps improve blood sugar control in various diabetes treatment situations.

Precautions

This medication contains two components used for diabetes treatment: sitagliptin and metformin. One of the most important precautions while taking this medication is the risk of hypersensitivity reactions. Serious allergic reactions such as skin rashes, hives, and breathing difficulties may occur after taking this medication, so if these symptoms arise, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Moreover, this medication may cause pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, so if symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or fever appear while taking it, seek immediate medical attention. The metformin component can lead to lactic acidosis, a rare but very serious side effect, characterized by fatigue, difficulty breathing, or abdominal pain. If these symptoms occur, discontinue use immediately and seek emergency treatment. This medication is not administered to patients with severely reduced kidney function, severe infections, acute heart failure, or acute myocardial infarction. It is also not used in pregnant or nursing women. Regular monitoring of kidney function is essential during treatment, and the medication should be temporarily halted in cases of dehydration or severe vomiting, diarrhea, etc. This medication may cause hypoglycemia, particularly when taken with insulin or sulfonylureas, so blood sugar levels should be frequently checked, and immediate action should be taken if symptoms occur. Furthermore, excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking this medication, and in cases of upcoming surgery, the medication should be discontinued 48 hours prior, resuming only after kidney function has returned to normal. Blistering on the skin or severe joint pain may occur, so inform a physician immediately and seek treatment if these symptoms arise. Finally, the safety and efficacy of this medication have not been confirmed for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, so it is not used in this population. Regular blood tests and kidney function assessments are of utmost importance while undergoing treatment to check for any abnormalities.
