Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct when blood sugar control is difficult for patients with type 2 diabetes using dietary restrictions and exercise alone. It is particularly helpful for individuals who have not previously received diabetes medication therapy and find it challenging to control blood sugar levels with monotherapy. Additionally, if blood sugar control is insufficient when taking metformin or sitagliptin alone, this medication can be used to switch treatments or for combination therapy. It can also enhance blood sugar control when used in conjunction with metformin and sulfonylurea, or metformin and thiazolidinedione if their combination is inadequate. If blood sugar control remains poor after using insulin and metformin, this medication may assist in treating by combining with insulin. Thus, it is employed to improve blood sugar control based on the patient's condition and existing treatment.

Precautions

This medication contains sitagliptin and metformin, diabetes treatment agents; therefore, several precautions must be adhered to while taking it. First, serious allergic reactions may occur during the use of this medication, so if symptoms such as rash, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck appear, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Additionally, there is a risk of developing acute pancreatitis, which causes inflammation of the pancreas, so if experiencing severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or fever, visit a hospital immediately. This medication should not be taken by patients with poor kidney function, acute heart disease, severe infections, or specific diseases; pregnant or breastfeeding women should also avoid it. Regular kidney function tests must be performed during use, and if kidney function rapidly declines, temporarily discontinue use of the medication. Moreover, the metformin component included in this medication can rarely lead to serious metabolic abnormalities known as lactic acidosis, so caution is required in cases of severe dehydration, excessive alcohol consumption, or severe infections. While using this medication, if meal quantities are irregular or physical activity increases suddenly, hypoglycemic symptoms may appear; therefore, blood sugar levels should be checked frequently, and attention should be paid to hypoglycemic symptoms. Furthermore, when used with other hypoglycemic agents or alcohol, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, so inform healthcare providers about any other medications or alcohol use. Patients scheduled for surgery should stop taking this medication 48 hours prior to surgery and resume only after confirming normal kidney function post-surgery. Finally, gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc.), headaches, and upper respiratory tract infections may occur during the use of this medication; consult healthcare providers if symptoms worsen.
