Improvement of blood sugar control in Type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with Type 2 diabetes. It can be given alone as initial treatment and is provided as an alternative therapy when blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy of metformin or sitagliptin. It can also be combined with multiple medications such as metformin, sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, and insulin to assist in achieving more effective blood sugar control. Depending on the patient's condition, various combination therapies can be used to aid in blood sugar management. This medication complements dietary control and exercise therapy to effectively improve blood sugar.
This medication is generally taken twice a day with food. To reduce gastrointestinal adverse reactions due to metformin, the dosage is gradually increased. 1. Patients not previously treated with metformin: Start with a dose of 1 tablet (50/500 mg) twice daily, and when increasing the dose, take 1 tablet (50/1000 mg) twice daily. 2. This medication may cause severe allergic reactions; therefore, if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur, immediately discontinue use and consult a doctor. During use, a serious inflammation of the pancreas called pancreatitis may occur, so if sudden abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, etc. are present, visit a hospital immediately. In patients with severe renal impairment or conditions such as severe infections, dehydration, heart failure, or acute myocardial infarction, taking this medication may be dangerous, therefore it should not be administered. Before undergoing examinations using radiopaque agents, this medication should be temporarily discontinued; after confirming normal kidney function afterward, it can be resumed. It is safer for women who are pregnant or possibly pregnant, as well as lactating women, to refrain from taking this medication. This medication can cause hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels must be carefully monitored, especially when taken with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents. Rare but severe metabolic abnormalities known as lactic acidosis may occur, so if symptoms such as muscle pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, or abdominal pain appear, immediately notify healthcare personnel and discontinue use. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects from this medication, so avoiding drinking during use is advised. Elderly patients or those with reduced kidney function should have their dosage adjusted and undergo regular kidney function tests. It is important to regularly undergo blood tests and kidney function tests while taking this medication to detect and manage adverse reactions early. For patients scheduled for surgery, discontinue use 48 hours prior to the procedure, and resume only after confirming normal kidney function post-surgery. If severe joint pain or blistering on the skin occurs during the course of this medication, consult a doctor immediately, and discontinuation may be necessary. If taking other medications that may interact with this drug, inform your doctor or pharmacist, as interactions could alter effectiveness, so caution is warranted.
