Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is particularly suitable for those who have not previously received diabetes drug treatment, or who find it difficult to control blood sugar levels with monotherapy. Additionally, this drug can be used in combination or as a substitute when sufficient blood sugar control is not achieved with monotherapy of metformin or sitagliptin. When blood glucose control is insufficient through combination therapy with metformin and sulphonylurea or thiazolidinedione, this medication can be administered to enhance effectiveness. If control is also difficult with the combination of insulin and metformin, adding insulin with this medication may improve blood sugar control. Thus, it aids in more effective blood sugar control in various treatment situations.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of diabetes and helps regulate blood sugar levels. While taking this medication, serious allergic reactions may occur, so if symptoms such as rash, hives, or difficulty breathing appear, immediately stop taking the medication and consult a physician. There can be rare but serious side effects such as pancreatitis, which causes inflammation of the pancreas. If symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, or loss of appetite occur, promptly inform healthcare personnel. Patients with poor kidney function, dehydration, severe infections, heart failure, or acute myocardial infarction should not take this medication. Also, this medication should be temporarily discontinued before tests using iodine-based contrast agents and should only be resumed after confirming normal kidney function post-test. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, and breastfeeding women should not take this medication. This medication can cause hypoglycemia, so extra caution is needed if meals are skipped or irregular, or if intense exercise is performed. Regular monitoring of blood sugar and kidney function is recommended during the course of treatment, and vitamin B12 levels should also be checked periodically. Alcohol intake can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so care should be taken to avoid excessive drinking while taking this medication. Prior to any surgery, this medication should be stopped 48 hours before the procedure, and resumed only after confirming normal kidney function post-surgery. Users must be aware of hypoglycemia symptoms during the treatment, and immediate appropriate action should be taken if symptoms arise. If serious joint pain or skin blistering occurs, consult a physician immediately. This medication may interact with other hypoglycemic agents or specific medications, so it is essential to inform healthcare personnel of any other medications being taken. Elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function require dose adjustments and regular monitoring. In case of overdose, seek medical attention promptly for appropriate treatment, and dialysis may be performed to eliminate the drug if necessary.
