Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • blood sugar control disorder
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise therapy to help patients with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar. It is administered as monotherapy for patients who are new to diabetes medication and are not achieving adequate blood sugar control. Additionally, it may replace metformin or sitagliptin monotherapy when blood sugar control is difficult, or when both medications are used together. If blood sugar control is still insufficient despite combination therapy with metformin and sulfonylurea or thiazolidinedione, this medication can be added. If blood sugar control remains challenging with insulin and metformin combination therapy, this medication can be used together with insulin. It is therefore effective in improving blood sugar control under various circumstances.

Patients who are not currently being treated with metformin: - The initial dosage is 1 tablet (50/500 mg) taken twice daily, and it may be increased to 1 tablet (50/1000 mg) taken twice daily. 2. Precautions

This medication contains sitagliptin and metformin and is used to treat diabetes. First, this medication may cause allergic reactions; if symptoms such as rash, hives, or difficulty breathing occur, you should stop using it immediately and consult a physician. Acute pancreatitis, a serious inflammation of the pancreas, may rarely occur, so if you experience abdominal pain, vomiting, or severe abdominal discomfort, you should inform a healthcare provider immediately. Furthermore, the metformin component may rarely cause a serious metabolic disturbance known as lactic acidosis, so if you experience shortness of breath, severe muscle pain, fatigue, or abdominal pain, you must go to the hospital immediately. This medication should not be administered to patients with severely impaired kidney function, acute heart failure, serious infections, severe liver disease, or to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Particularly in cases of compromised kidney function, administration of this medication should be avoided or done with caution, and regular kidney function tests must be performed. Additionally, excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided during treatment; and if surgery is imminent, the medication should be stopped 48 hours prior to the surgery and can be resumed only after confirming normal kidney function post-surgery. This medication poses a risk of hypoglycemia, so regular meals should be maintained, and caution should be exercised during vigorous exercise or if food intake is insufficient. When used in combination with other blood sugar-lowering agents, especially insulin or sulfonylureas, the risk of hypoglycemia increases, so dosages should be adjusted according to a physician's directions. Regular blood sugar, kidney function, and blood tests should be conducted during the use of this medication to monitor for abnormalities, and vitamin B12 levels may decrease, so supplementation may be necessary. Finally, this medication has not established safety and efficacy in children and adolescents; therefore, it should not be used in this demographic. By adhering to these precautions, the benefits of this medication can be enjoyed safely.
