Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used along with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used when it is difficult to control blood sugar levels alone if there is no prior experience with diabetes medication. Additionally, this medicine is used when monotherapy with metformin or sitagliptin is insufficient, or when it is necessary to replace combination therapy with both drugs. If blood sugar is not controlled with combination therapy of metformin with sulfonylurea, or metformin with thiazolidinedione, this medication can be added to enhance blood sugar control. It is also added to improve therapeutic effect in cases where control is difficult with insulin and metformin combination therapy. In summary, this medicine is used to improve blood sugar control in various medication treatment scenarios.
This medication is generally taken 2 times a day with food, with gradual dose escalation to reduce gastrointestinal side effects associated with metformin. 1. Patients not previously treated with metformin: The initial dose is 50/500 mg of this medication, taken as 1 tablet twice daily, with the possibility of increasing to 50/1000 mg. 2. Patients currently being treated with metformin: The recommended initial dose is sitagliptin 50 mg twice daily (for a total daily dose of 100 mg) along with the existing metformin dosage.
This medication is a combination product that contains sitagliptin and metformin, and is used for blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. When taking this medication, serious hypersensitivity reactions can occur, so if symptoms such as rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a doctor. Serious pancreatic inflammation known as pancreatitis can occur, so if there are symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, or persistent abdominal discomfort, quickly visit a hospital. Furthermore, due to the metformin component, a rare but fatal metabolic disorder called lactic acidosis may occur, so if there is sudden fatigue, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, severe vomiting, or diarrhea, it is important to inform medical personnel immediately. Patients with severely impaired kidney function, severe infection, dehydration, acute myocardial infarction, sepsis, or acute heart failure should not take this medication, and it should be discontinued before and after tests using iodinated contrast agents. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and those who are breastfeeding, should also not use this medication. While taking this medication, it is crucial to maintain regular meals and proper exercise, and be cautious of symptoms of hypoglycemia if blood sugar decreases too low. The risk of hypoglycemia may be increased, especially when used with other blood sugar-lowering agents. Elderly patients may experience reduced kidney function, therefore regular kidney function tests should be conducted, and dosage adjustment may be necessary. This medication should be used cautiously in patients with impaired liver function, and alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis. In case of surgery, this medication should be stopped 48 hours prior to the surgery and restarted only after confirming normal kidney function post-surgery. Additionally, this medication may interact with other drugs, so if there are current medications being taken, inform your doctor or pharmacist, especially when used in combination with drugs that may affect kidney function, careful observation of kidney function is required. It is important to regularly monitor blood sugar, kidney function, and blood tests while taking this medication to check health status.
