Efficacy & effects

Improved blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in controlling blood sugar for patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medicine is used as an adjunct to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is administered when blood sugar control is difficult with dietary and exercise therapy, and is especially effective in cases where patients have not previously received diabetes medication or where monotherapy is insufficient. It can be used as a substitute when blood glucose control is not achieved with either metformin or sitagliptin monotherapy, or with combinations of these two medications. Additionally, if the effect is inadequate with the combination of metformin and sulfonylurea, or metformin and thiazolidinedione, this medicine can be used in conjunction. If blood sugar control remains difficult after combining insulin and metformin, this medicine can be used in combination with insulin. Thus, it is used to improve blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes who are difficult to manage through multiple treatment methods.

The initial dose is determined based on the patient's current treatment regimen. 1. Precautions

This medication may cause hypersensitivity reactions; if symptoms of allergy, skin rash, or difficulty breathing occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor. Also, if symptoms of acute pancreatitis such as severe abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting appear, cease medication immediately and inform healthcare personnel. This drug should not be used in patients with moderate or severe renal impairment or in states at risk of acute kidney failure, and kidney function should be regularly monitored for normalcy. Administration should also be avoided in patients with acute or unstable heart failure, severe infections, cardiovascular collapse, and in cases where iodine contrast agents are used during certain tests. It is advised not to use this medication during pregnancy or in women of childbearing potential, as well as in nursing mothers. Patients with irregular meals, malnutrition, engaging in vigorous exercise, or those using other medications that may cause hypoglycemia should exercise caution. This drug can cause a rare but serious side effect called lactic acidosis, so if symptoms like muscle pain, weakness, difficulty breathing, or abdominal pain occur, contact healthcare personnel immediately. Additionally, excessive alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it is best to avoid. Due to the risk of hypoglycemia, the changes in blood sugar should be closely monitored when using this medication in conjunction with blood sugar-lowering agents or insulin, and the dosage of other medications should be adjusted if necessary. Before and after surgery, this medication should be discontinued for a certain period, resuming only after the patient's condition has stabilized and kidney function is confirmed to be normal. Routine blood tests and kidney function checks should be conducted while on this medication, and periodic checks of vitamin B12 levels are recommended. If blisters or rash appear on the skin, inform a doctor immediately, and precaution should be taken in cases of severe joint or muscle pain. This medication is not used in children and adolescents as its safety and efficacy have not been confirmed. In the case of overdose, inform healthcare personnel immediately and receive appropriate treatment, including blood dialysis if necessary.
