View approved original text

This medication is used as a treatment to assist in the blood sugar control of patients with type 2 diabetes and plays a role in supporting dietary and exercise therapy. It can be administered solely to patients who are starting diabetes medication for the first time, and is used in combination with metformin or sitagliptin if blood sugar control is insufficient with monotherapy alone. Additionally, if blood sugar control is inadequate with combination therapy of metformin and sulfonylureas or thiazolidinediones, this medication can be added to enhance efficacy. It also improves treatment effectiveness when combined with insulin and metformin if blood sugar control is challenging. Therefore, it is used in a variety of combinations to enhance blood sugar control.

Precautions

This medication contains both sitagliptin and metformin and is used for blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. During the course of taking this medication, severe allergic reactions may occur, so if symptoms such as rash, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck develop, you should immediately stop taking the medication and consult a doctor. There is also a risk of pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas, so if symptoms such as sudden abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or fever occur, immediate medical attention should be sought. Due to the metformin component, lactic acidosis, a rare but serious metabolic abnormality, may occur. If symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, or unusual drowsiness occur, you should inform your doctor immediately. This medication should not be administered to patients with significantly reduced kidney function, severe liver disease, acute heart conditions, severe infections, or dehydration. Patients scheduled to undergo tests with radiologic contrast agents should discontinue the use of this medication for a certain period before and after the examination, so it is crucial to discuss this with healthcare professionals. It is safer for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as lactating women, to avoid taking this medication. During treatment, there may be symptoms of hypoglycemia, such as extremely low blood sugar, therefore irregular eating, excessive exercise, and alcohol consumption should be avoided. If symptoms of hypoglycemia (dizziness, cold sweat, shaking, etc.) occur, immediate action should be taken. Regular tests of kidney function and blood tests should be conducted, and since vitamin B12 levels may decrease, supplementation may be necessary. If undergoing surgery, this medication should be temporarily discontinued 48 hours before the procedure, and resumed only after normal oral intake is restored and kidney function is confirmed. This medication may interact with other hypoglycemic agents, antihypertensives, diuretics, etc., so if you are taking other medications, it is essential to inform your doctor or pharmacist. In the event of an overdose, immediate medical attention should be sought, and blood dialysis may be beneficial. It is advisable to avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication, and if sudden changes in symptoms or adverse reactions are suspected, immediately consult a physician.
