How to take

Adult dose

This medication is generally administered once a day with the evening meal. The maximum dose is dapagliflozin 10 mg/metformin sustained release 2000 mg once a day. The recommended starting dose when used as initial therapy is one tablet of 5 mg/500 mg or 10 mg/500 mg once a day. For patients receiving metformin therapy, the recommended dose of dapagliflozin is 10 mg once a day, adjusted to match the existing metformin dosage.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and helps lower blood sugar. It contains two components, metformin and dapagliflozin. Metformin controls blood sugar and improves insulin resistance, while dapagliflozin helps lower blood sugar by allowing glucose to be excreted in urine through the kidneys. When taking this medication, it is essential to confirm that kidney function is normal. Patients with impaired kidney function or certain acute illnesses should not take this medication. There is a very rare but serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, which can be life-threatening, so if symptoms arise, medical consultation should be sought immediately. In addition, caution is needed as there is a risk of hypoglycemia when taken with insulin or sulfonylurea medications. This medication should not be given to patients with conditions such as dehydration, severe infections, acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and the medication should be discontinued for a certain period before and after surgery. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use this medication. During treatment, genital infections or urinary tract infections may occur, so if these symptoms appear, the patient should inform a doctor immediately. Symptoms of decreased fluid volume or low blood pressure may occur, so elderly patients or those on diuretics should carefully monitor blood pressure and hydration status. This medication may lower vitamin B12 levels, so it is advisable to check vitamin B12 status through blood tests if taken for a long time. Excessive alcohol intake may increase the risk of side effects, so it should be avoided. Regular monitoring of kidney function and blood sugar status is necessary during treatment to ensure there are no abnormalities. If symptoms such as sudden weight loss, abdominal pain, vomiting, or difficulty breathing occur, medical personnel should be notified immediately. This medication has not been established as safe for children or pregnant women, so it should not be used in these populations. When storing the medication, keep it out of reach of children and store in its original container to maintain quality.
