This medication helps improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes when administered in combination with dapagliflozin and metformin. It is particularly used as an adjunct to dietary and exercise regimens. It may also be effective for patients with cardiovascular disease or risk factors if blood sugar is inadequately controlled. However, consultation with a healthcare professional is recommended regarding the potential for cardiovascular-related side effects. Overall, this medication is used to effectively improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is generally administered once daily with the evening meal. The maximum dosage is 10 mg of dapagliflozin/2000 mg of extended-release metformin once daily, taken as 2 tablets of 5 mg/1000 mg. For patients with no previous experience in diabetes medication and who find it challenging to achieve adequate blood sugar control with monotherapy, an initial dosage of 5 mg/500 mg or 10 mg/500 mg tablet is recommended once daily.

Precautions

This medication helps lower blood sugar levels. However, there is a risk of a rare but very serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, which may occur during treatment. Lactic acidosis is a condition in which lactic acid builds up in the body and can be life-threatening in severe cases. This medication should not be administered to patients with impaired kidney function, dehydration, severe infections, heart problems, acute myocardial infarction, and similar conditions. Additionally, it should not be used by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. During the use of this medication, hypoglycemia may occur, especially when used with insulin or other blood sugar-lowering agents, so dosage adjustments may be necessary. This medication may cause a decrease in fluid volume and hypotension, making it essential for older adults or patients with weak kidney function to use it cautiously under medical supervision. Symptoms of genital infections or urinary tract infections may occur, so medical consultation is advised if symptoms arise. Regular blood tests are recommended to monitor potential decreases in vitamin B12 levels. During treatment, excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided, and patients should inform their doctor prior to undergoing surgery or contrast examinations, which may require pausing the medication for a period of time. Dizziness or lightheadedness may occur, requiring caution when driving or operating machinery. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in its original container for safety.
