This medication serves as an emergency contraceptive that should be used immediately after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure, helping to prevent unwanted pregnancy if used within 72 hours after intercourse.

How to take

Adult dose

Administer 1.5 mg of levonorgestrel orally as a single dose. It is recommended to take it as soon as possible, ideally within 12 hours, and no later than 72 hours after intercourse. If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of taking, another 1.5 mg should be taken immediately. Non-hormonal local contraceptive methods should be used until the next menstrual cycle begins. After the start of the next menstrual cycle, regular hormonal contraceptive methods can be initiated.

Precautions

This drug should only be used as a temporary method of emergency contraception and should not replace regular contraceptive methods. Taking this medication does not guarantee the prevention of pregnancy in every case; thus, especially when the timing of intercourse is unclear, pregnancy should be verified. If menstruation is delayed by more than 5 days from the expected date, if there is abnormal bleeding during menstruation, or if signs of pregnancy occur, a pregnancy test must be performed. Individuals allergic to this medication or its ingredients should not take it, and pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should also avoid using this medication. Patients with severely impaired liver function should not use this medication. This medication contains lactose, so individuals with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should not take it. Patients who have a risk of ectopic pregnancy or a history of ectopic pregnancy, as well as those with salpingitis or pelvic inflammatory disease, should use this medication cautiously. In cases of serious gastrointestinal diseases like Crohn's disease, the drug's effectiveness may be reduced; thus, caution is needed. Patients with heart or kidney conditions or a medical history of such conditions should be cautious, as symptoms may worsen with this medication. Side effects that may occur include dizziness, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, breast tenderness, menstrual delays or heavy bleeding, and fatigue. Most side effects subside within 48 hours after taking the medication; however, breast tenderness or bleeding may continue until the next menstruation. As skin hypersensitivity reactions may occur, patients should consult a doctor immediately if any abnormal symptoms arise. Cases of thromboembolism have been reported, so women with risk factors for thrombus or a family history should exercise caution. Taking this medication more than once within a single menstrual cycle may lead to decreased effectiveness and increased risk of side effects, so it should be used only once. Contraceptive methods such as condoms or spermicides must be used alongside this medication until the next menstruation starts. It should be taken within 72 hours after intercourse for effectiveness; it is advisable not to use this medication after 72 hours. Further sexual intercourse within 72 hours after taking the medication could present a risk of pregnancy, so caution is warranted. Menstruation generally starts on the expected date, but it may arrive 3 days early or late; if menstruation is delayed by more than 5 days, a pregnancy test should be conducted. This medication does not prevent sexually transmitted infections, so other methods should be employed for STI prevention. For initiating standard contraceptive methods after taking this medication, consulting a doctor is recommended, and if menstruation does not occur, the possibility of pregnancy should be considered. Repeated use of this drug can increase hormone levels, which may negatively affect health and disrupt the menstrual cycle; therefore, long-term contraceptive methods should be considered if emergency contraception is often needed. Using certain medications concurrently may reduce the effectiveness of this drug, so caution is particularly required in combination with certain enzyme inducers. This medication should not be used during pregnancy, as taking it in early or mid-pregnancy could affect fetal genital development. During breastfeeding, this medication can be transferred into breast milk, so it is recommended to suspend breastfeeding for at least 8 hours after taking the medication. No serious side effects have been reported in the case of overdose, though nausea or bleeding may occur, thus appropriate treatment is necessary depending on the symptoms. This medication should be stored in light-blocking packaging and kept in a safe place out of reach of children. Transferring the medication to another container may adversely affect its quality, so caution should be exercised.
