This medication is effective against Candida species that are susceptible to nystatin. It is mainly used in the treatment of gastrointestinal candidiasis and oral candidiasis. These candidiasis infections occur due to excessive proliferation of the fungus, and this medication can help improve the symptoms and assist in treatment.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and children (over 24 months): Take 1 dose of 400,000 to 600,000 units (4 to 6 mL) orally 3 to 4 times a day.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by those who are allergic to this medication or its components. This medication contains a pigment called Yellow No. 5, so caution should be exercised by those who have allergic reactions or hypersensitivity to this pigment. When taking this medication, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, and diarrhea may occasionally occur. In very rare cases, severe symptoms on the skin and mucous membranes known as Stevens-Johnson syndrome may occur, and if skin rash or mucosal abnormalities appear, the medication should be stopped immediately and medical attention should be sought. Additionally, if allergic symptoms such as rash or itching occur, discontinue the medication. Rarely, symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, bronchospasm, facial swelling, hives, and muscle pain may occur, so caution is necessary for these symptoms as well. When using this medication, it is advisable to ensure that the infective pathogens respond well to this medication and to take it for only the minimum necessary duration in order to prevent bacteria or fungi from developing resistance to the medication. This medication is not effective for treating systemic candidiasis, and alternative treatment is needed for such cases. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use this medication if the benefits outweigh the risks, as the safety of this medication is not fully established. This medication is poorly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract; however, the possibility of affecting the baby through breast milk has not yet been confirmed, so nursing women should also use it cautiously. Elderly patients may have reduced bodily functions, so special care such as reducing the dosage may be necessary when using this medication. Lastly, this medication should be shaken well before use to ensure that the contents are evenly mixed and should only be taken orally.
