This medication is used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and erosive esophagitis. It is also effective for long-term maintenance therapy to prevent recurrence in patients with esophagitis. It helps alleviate symptoms in patients with GERD who do not have esophagitis. It is used to improve various issues caused by gastroesophageal reflux.

How to take

Adult dose

Take this medicine on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before meals. Swallow the tablet whole with at least half a cup of water. Do not take with any beverages other than water. Do not chew or crush the tablet. For the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): Take 40/800mg once daily for 4 weeks. If symptoms persist or are not treated, continue for another 4 weeks. Long-term maintenance therapy to prevent recurrence: 20/800mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. Patients who are allergic to this drug or its components, or who have had hypersensitivity reactions, should not receive it. It should also not be administered to patients taking certain antiviral medications or rilpivirine, nursing mothers, or patients with a history of myocardial infarction. Patients with liver or kidney function problems, the elderly, patients with weakened heart or lung function, and those with severe gastrointestinal ulcers should use this medication cautiously. Patients with electrolyte imbalances such as hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, or Bartter syndrome also require caution. Various adverse reactions can occur with this medication; thus, if symptoms such as headache, dizziness, dyspepsia, skin rash, or myalgia occur while taking it, the healthcare provider should be consulted immediately. Though rare, serious skin reactions, blood abnormalities, and liver function anomalies can also occur, so careful observation of abnormal symptoms is necessary. Regular check-ups are needed for long-term use, and since this medication can reduce gastric acidity, increasing the risk of bacterial infections, consultation with a doctor is advisable if symptoms like diarrhea persist. As this medication may interact with other drugs, it is essential to inform the healthcare provider of any ongoing medications. Special caution is required when used in combination with anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, and antiviral medications. Women who are pregnant or nursing should definitely consult a doctor before taking this medication, and it is safer to avoid it while nursing. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote; treatment should be symptomatic, and the medication should be stored out of reach of children. Avoid transferring the medication to another container; it is advised to keep it in its original packaging to maintain quality and safety.
