Treatment for type 2 diabetes blood sugar control and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk in chronic heart failure and kidney disease
This drug is used in conjunction with diet and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is also used with other medications to reduce the risk of death and hospitalization from cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic heart failure. In adult patients with chronic kidney disease, it helps lower the risk of kidney function deterioration and cardiovascular death. Overall, this drug is effective in improving the health of patients with diabetes, heart failure, and kidney disease.
Type 2 diabetes: The recommended dose is 10 mg once daily, and if well tolerated with additional blood sugar control required, the dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily. Chronic heart failure: 10 mg once daily. Chronic kidney disease: 10 mg once daily. This medication can be taken regardless of meals and should be swallowed whole. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered, but do not double the dose on the same day.
This drug should not be used by patients who have an allergic reaction to the active ingredient, patients with type 1 diabetes, or those with diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients with decreased kidney function should use this drug cautiously and should have their kidney function tested before and regularly during use. It is especially not recommended for patients with very low kidney function or those on dialysis. When used in conjunction with insulin or medications that promote insulin secretion, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase; therefore, dosage adjustments of these medications may be necessary when used together with this drug. This drug may cause side effects such as hypoglycemia, genital infections, urinary tract infections, increased urination, and decreased fluid volume, so symptoms should be monitored closely. Ensure immediate medical consultation if symptoms like vomiting, abdominal pain, or difficulty breathing occur due to the risk of serious metabolic diseases known as ketoacidosis. Elderly patients and those at risk of fluid loss should be cautious about dehydration and hypotension, and it is important to regularly check blood pressure and fluid status. Cases of liver damage have been reported with this drug, so caution is needed in patients with liver function abnormalities. Additionally, this drug can cause serious urinary infections such as urosepsis or pyelonephritis, so immediate treatment is necessary if symptoms of urinary infections occur. It is recommended that pregnant women not use this drug, and breastfeeding should be discontinued during treatment with this drug. Pediatric and adolescent patients (under 18 years) should not use this drug as its safety and efficacy have not been established. Caution is necessary when driving or operating machinery due to the risk of hypoglycemia during treatment with this drug. No specific toxic symptoms have been reported in the event of overdose, but if overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention should be sought. Lastly, this drug should be kept out of the reach of children and not transferred to other containers.
