This medication is used to assist patients with type 2 diabetes in controlling their blood sugar levels. It can be administered alone or in conjunction with other medications while following dietary and exercise regimens. This helps effectively manage blood sugar levels and improve symptoms of diabetes.

How to take

Adult dose

The recommended dosage for this medication, whether used alone or in combination therapy, is 20 mg once daily. It can be taken without regard to meals. When used in combination with sulfonylureas, a reduction in sulfonylurea dosage may be considered to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia. No dosage adjustment is needed in patients with renal impairment or mild to moderate liver impairment.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to the active ingredient or any other components. It is not appropriate to administer this medication to patients with diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic coma, or type 1 diabetes as insulin treatment is necessary. Use should be avoided in patients with severe infections or those undergoing surgical procedures, as well as in patients with severe trauma, since insulin therapy may be required. For patients with severe liver dysfunction, the safety of this medication has not been established, thus it should be used with caution. In patients with mild to moderate heart failure, it should be used carefully, and it is not recommended for patients with severe heart failure. Patients taking sulfonylureas or insulin should be cautious due to the risk of hypoglycemia. Patients with pituitary or adrenal insufficiency, poor nutritional status, irregular eating habits, those who exercise vigorously, or those with excessive alcohol intake are at higher risk of hypoglycemia, so caution is required. Patients with a history of abdominal surgery or intestinal obstruction should also be cautious when using this medication. For patients with heart conditions or those at risk of QT interval prolongation due to hypokalemia, it is advisable to avoid this medication. If symptoms of acute pancreatitis occur, the physician should be notified immediately and the medication should be discontinued. Hypoglycemic symptoms may occur during the use of this medication; therefore, food containing sugar should be prepared and consumed immediately if symptoms arise. If symptoms such as constipation, abdominal bloating, persistent abdominal pain, or vomiting occur, the physician should be consulted immediately. If any abnormal symptoms such as liver dysfunction, pneumonia, or skin rash occur, immediate medical attention is required. When using this medication in combination with other diabetes treatments, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase; therefore, the medications being taken and blood sugar levels should be closely monitored. Pregnant or nursing women should consult their physician before using this medication. Caution should be taken when using this medication in children or the elderly, as its safety and efficacy have not been sufficiently established in these populations. In case of overdose, immediate medical attention is required, and general emergency treatment may be necessary. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
