Prevention of zinc deficiency and improvement of nutritional status

View approved original text

Zinc supplementation is very important for patients receiving Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). Zinc is an essential mineral for various enzymatic actions and immune function in the body. During TPN, there is a risk of zinc deficiency, necessitating appropriate supplementation. Zinc deficiency can lead to various problems such as delayed wound healing and decreased immunity. Therefore, zinc is used to maintain nutritional status and improve overall health during TPN.

Precautions

This medicine should not be injected directly into the peripheral vein in its undiluted form. This is because administering it in this way may cause venous inflammation or increase the risk of rapid loss of zinc through the kidneys. The amount of zinc included in this medicine is very small, and typically toxic symptoms do not occur. It is important to maintain aseptic conditions when mixing this medicine, especially when combined with TPN solutions, and it should be handled carefully in a clean environment. Before administration, visually check the solution for any precipitate or discoloration. When administering zinc, the copper concentration may decrease, so periodically checking the serum copper and zinc levels to determine the appropriate dosage is recommended. Zinc is mainly excreted through the intestines and kidneys, so patients with renal impairment should be cautious as zinc may accumulate in the body. When using this medicine in pregnant women or women of childbearing potential, it should only be administered if the benefits of treatment are believed to outweigh the risks. Zinc can cross the placenta and may be present in breast milk, so pregnant and nursing women should use it with particular caution. In case of overdose, severe symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, dizziness, abdominal pain, drowsiness, or coordination disorders may occur. In such cases, immediate consultation with a healthcare provider is needed, and calcium supplementation may help prevent zinc toxicity. This medicine should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Also, since it does not contain preservatives, any remaining medication should be discarded after use.
