It is particularly used to effectively reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B levels to improve cardiovascular health. This drug aids in the management of dyslipidemia as an adjunct to dietary therapy.

How to take

Adult dose

For adults, the usual initial dose is 1 to 2 mg of pitavastatin calcium taken once daily. If the LDL cholesterol-lowering effect is insufficient, the dose may be increased up to a maximum of 4 mg per day. The dosage should be adjusted appropriately at intervals of 4 weeks or more, depending on the LDL cholesterol levels, treatment goals, and the patient's response.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. Patients who are allergic to this medication, have severe liver dysfunction, are pregnant or may become pregnant, are nursing, or have muscle disorders should not take this drug. Additionally, it is not used in children due to safety not being established. Patients with renal dysfunction, a history of liver disease, those who consume excessive alcohol, the elderly, and patients with hypothyroidism should use this drug very cautiously. Especially, serious side effects such as muscle damage or worsening of kidney function may occur when used in combination with other specific medications, so consultation with a physician or pharmacist is advised. If during treatment with this medication, symptoms like muscle pain, weakness, urine discoloration, severe fatigue, rash, itching, or jaundice occur, inform medical personnel immediately. It is important to have regular liver function tests to monitor liver status and discontinue the medication if any abnormal signs are detected. Since this medication is used to lower cholesterol levels, it is recommended to combine it with a diet and exercise before use, and if there is no therapeutic effect, discontinuation should occur. This is a pill form and should be swallowed whole without breaking it, and stored out of reach of children.
