Improvement of lipid levels through reduction of cholesterol and increase of HDL in hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and dyslipidemia
This medication is used in conjunction with dietary therapy to lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels and raise the good cholesterol HDL levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. Additionally, it is administered as an adjunctive treatment for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia who are insufficiently responsive to other therapies. When taking this medication, it is important to confirm and treat other causes of dyslipidemia, such as diabetes or hypothyroidism, alongside appropriate dietary adjustments. Consideration should also be given to concomitant diseases such as obstructive liver disease or chronic renal failure, and treatment efficacy should be continuously monitored through lipid tests. In the event of an acute cardiovascular event, lipid tests should be conducted swiftly to establish a proper treatment plan. This medication is effectively used to improve blood lipid abnormalities associated with hypercholesterolemia.
This medication is administered once daily, regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, the dosage range is 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg per day, with a recommended initial dose of 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg daily. For patients needing a greater reduction in LDL-cholesterol, an initial dose of 10/40 mg per day is advised. After initiation of therapy or dose adjustment, test blood lipid levels after an interval of at least 2 weeks.
This medication can affect muscles and may rarely cause serious muscle damage and renal impairment. Therefore, if symptoms of severe muscle pain occur, or in the presence of acute infections, hypotension, major surgeries, trauma, or metabolic abnormalities, the use of this medication should be paused or discontinued. Patients with known hypersensitivity to this medication, active liver disease, muscle disorders, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, nursing mothers, or those taking certain antiviral medications should not use this medication. Additionally, patients with genetic issues such as lactose intolerance should avoid this medication. Caution should be exercised for alcoholics, patients with reduced liver function, those with impaired renal function or a family history of muscle disorders, and elderly patients; they should use this medication judiciously and report any muscle pain or abnormal symptoms to a physician immediately. This medication may have side effects such as muscle pain, abdominal pain, and elevated liver enzymes, so patients should inform healthcare professionals if such symptoms occur during treatment. Patients with liver function impairment should undergo liver function tests before using this medication, and treatment should be discontinued immediately if symptoms of liver damage appear. This medication may interact with other drugs, so individuals currently taking other medications must inform their doctor or pharmacist, particularly when taken with certain antibiotics, antivirals, immunosuppressants, or colchicine, as caution is advised. Women of childbearing potential should use appropriate contraception while taking this medication to avoid pregnancy, and immediately discontinue use upon pregnancy confirmation. Dizziness and other symptoms may occur, so caution is necessary when driving or operating machinery. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children have not been established, and it is not recommended for use in pediatric patients. In the event of overdose, there are no specific antidotes; treatment should be symptomatic, and liver function and muscle enzyme tests should be used for proper management. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
