Improvement of lipid levels by reducing cholesterol and increasing HDL in hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia.
This medication helps control blood cholesterol and related lipid levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, and mixed dyslipidemia. It is particularly used to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels, while raising the good cholesterol, HDL cholesterol. This medication is administered in conjunction with dietary therapy and may also be used as an adjunct to other lipid-lowering treatments when necessary. Additionally, it is used considering multiple risk factors to reduce the risk of atherosclerotic vascular diseases associated with hypercholesterolemia. It is important to check and manage other causes of dyslipidemia such as diabetes and hypothyroidism before using this medication. Overall, this medication is effectively used to support cardiovascular health by improving blood lipid levels.
This medication is administered once daily without regard to meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, it is administered within the dosage range of 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg per day. A starting dose of 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg per day is recommended. For patients requiring a more significant reduction (more than 55%) in LDL cholesterol, a starting dose of 10/40 mg per day is recommended. After initiation or dose adjustment, follow-up on lipid levels should occur at intervals of two weeks.
This medication can cause a rare side effect known as rhabdomyolysis, which may lead to severe muscle damage. This can cause rapid deterioration of kidney function, so if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs, you should inform your doctor immediately. This medication should not be administered to patients with certain diseases or poor liver function, those with muscle-related conditions, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and patients taking certain other medications. Caution should be taken when using this medication in patients with a history of alcohol addiction or liver disease, decreased kidney function, hypothyroidism, older adults, and patients at high risk for myopathy. During treatment with this medication, regular liver function tests and muscle-related tests should be conducted, and if symptoms of liver dysfunction, muscle pain, or muscle weakness occur, treatment should be discontinued immediately and medical consultation sought. Furthermore, this medication can interact with several other drugs, so if you are taking other medications, you must inform your healthcare provider, particularly when combined with drugs that affect liver metabolism. Pregnant women or women planning to become pregnant should not take this medication, and women of childbearing potential should use appropriate contraception during treatment. Nursing mothers should also avoid this medication. It is advisable not to use this medication in children as its safety and efficacy have not been established. In older adults, special caution is needed due to the higher risk of myopathy, although generally, no specific dosage adjustment is required. In case of overdose, as there is no specific antidote, treatment should be based on symptoms with appropriate supportive therapy, and liver function and muscle enzyme levels should be monitored. Lastly, this medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
