Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used in conjunction with a meal plan and exercise to help manage blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to enhance therapeutic effects. This helps improve blood sugar management and alleviates symptoms of diabetes.
The recommended dose of this medication is 20 mg once daily, whether used alone or in combination therapy. It can be taken regardless of meals. When used in combination with sulfonylureas, a reduction in the sulfonylurea dose may be considered to minimize the risk of hypoglycemia. No dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with renal impairment. No dosage adjustment is required in patients with mild to moderate liver dysfunction.
This medication should not be administered to certain patients. First, patients who have allergic reactions to the active ingredient or other components should not use this product. Second, this drug is not suitable for patients with diabetic ketoacidosis, coma, or type 1 diabetes, as they require insulin treatment. Third, it is not recommended for patients with severe infections, those undergoing surgery, or individuals who have suffered serious injuries. In these cases, blood sugar should be managed with insulin. Additionally, caution is needed when using this medication in the following patients. Patients with severe liver dysfunction should use this medication carefully due to a lack of clinical experience. For patients with mild to moderate heart failure (New York Heart Association Functional Classification I–II), careful administration is also required, and it is not recommended for patients with severe heart failure (NYHA III–IV). Patients taking sulfonylureas or insulin should also exercise caution. Patients at risk for hypoglycemia, such as those with pituitary or adrenal insufficiency, poor nutritional status, irregular eating habits, those who exercise vigorously, or those who consume excessive alcohol, should be cautious as well. Patients with a history of abdominal surgery or bowel obstruction should also be careful when using this drug. It is advisable to avoid this medication in patients with risks for QT interval prolongation, such as heart disease or hypokalemia. Symptoms of pancreatitis can occur, and if severe abdominal pain or vomiting happens, immediate medical assessment is required. Using this medication may result in symptoms of hypoglycemia. Particularly, when used in conjunction with insulin or sulfonylureas, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, necessitating careful monitoring of blood sugar status. If hypoglycemic symptoms occur, consuming sugar-containing food is necessary, and in certain drug combinations, administering glucose may be required. Gastrointestinal side effects may include constipation, abdominal distention, abdominal pain, and nausea; if symptoms are severe, consultation with a physician is recommended. If symptoms of liver dysfunction or interstitial pneumonia, or skin blisters or erosions appear, immediate medical treatment is necessary. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy due to unestablished safety, and careful consideration is needed while breastfeeding. Elderly patients may have reduced physical function; therefore, monitoring their condition during administration is essential. No severe side effects have been reported from overdose of this medication, but general treatment and supportive care based on the patient's condition are necessary in case of overdose. This medication is not used in children as its safety and efficacy have not been established in this population. When storing this medication, keep it out of reach of children, and avoid transferring it to other containers. There may be drug interactions when using this medication with other diabetes treatments, so consultation with a physician or pharmacist about other medications being taken is essential.
