This medication helps lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, while increasing HDL-cholesterol levels. It is also effective in pediatric patients aged 10 to 16 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, especially when LDL-cholesterol levels are high or when there is a family history or other cardiovascular risk factors. This medicine is used as an adjunct to dietary therapy to improve blood lipid levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

How to take

Adult dose

For adults, the usual initial dosage is 1 to 2 milligrams of pitavastatin calcium once daily. If the LDL-cholesterol-lowering effect is insufficient, it may be increased to a maximum of 4 milligrams once daily. Adjust the dosage appropriately depending on LDL-cholesterol levels, treatment goals, and patient response at intervals of 4 weeks or more.

Child dose

For pediatric patients (ages 10 to 16) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, take 1 milligram of pitavastatin calcium once daily. If the effect of lowering LDL-cholesterol is insufficient, increase to a maximum of 2 milligrams once daily.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it should not be administered to patients who have allergies to this medication, severely impaired liver function, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Additionally, patients with poor kidney function or liver impairment should use this drug cautiously. Since this medication is primarily metabolized in the liver, it may affect liver function. During the course of treatment, muscle-related symptoms such as myalgia or weakness may occur. If these symptoms occur, the patient should consult a doctor immediately. Since liver function abnormalities may occur, liver function tests should be performed regularly before and during treatment. If liver enzyme levels rise, discontinuation of the medication may be necessary. Platelet counts may decrease in blood tests, so it is also necessary to check blood statuses regularly. This medication may interact with other drugs, so caution is needed when taken with cyclosporine, fibrate drugs, or niacin, and co-administration should be avoided. Special care is required when administering it to elderly patients or children, as children may be at risk of muscle abnormalities depending on their activity levels and intensity, so it should be used cautiously under a doctor's instruction. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should not take this medication, and if pregnancy is confirmed, treatment should be discontinued immediately. While taking this medication, blood lipid levels should be monitored regularly to confirm treatment efficacy, and if there is no effect, treatment should be discontinued. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children and kept in its original container for safety. Adverse reactions during treatment may include abdominal pain, rash, fatigue, and itching, and in severe cases, serious muscle conditions such as myositis or rhabdomyolysis may occur. If these symptoms appear, the patient should inform a physician immediately and stop the treatment.
