Improvement of blood sugar control in adult type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy to help adults with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels. It can be taken alone or in combination with metformin, pioglitazone, sulfonylureas, insulin, or the DPP-4 inhibitor linagliptin if blood sugar is not adequately controlled with existing therapies. In particular, for patients with accompanying cardiovascular diseases, caution regarding the occurrence of cardiovascular events should be observed as per a specialist's advice. This medication effectively improves blood sugar control and is used to assist in managing diabetes.
The recommended dose for this medication is 10 mg once daily for monotherapy and additional combination therapy with insulin and other antidiabetic agents. In cases with excellent tolerability and the need for additional blood sugar control, the dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily. This medication can be taken regardless of meals, and the tablet should be swallowed whole. Do not take double the prescribed dose in one day.
This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, patients with allergies to the active ingredient or components of this medication, patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, patients with severely impaired kidney function, and those with genetic issues such as lactose intolerance or galactose absorption problems should not use this medication. In patients with moderately impaired kidney function, caution should be exercised, and if kidney function continues to deteriorate, discontinuation of this medication may be necessary. This medication is not expected to be effective in patients with end-stage renal disease or those undergoing dialysis. In patients with heart failure, especially those with mild to moderate cases, careful use is advised, and it is not recommended for severe heart failure patients. This medication may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when used with insulin or sulfonylureas, thus necessitating dose adjustments of these medications. While taking this medication, patients should carefully monitor for symptoms such as hypoglycemia, urinary tract infections, genital infections, increased urination, and decreased fluid volume. Especially, there is a risk of metabolic acidosis known as ketoacidosis, so if symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or difficulty breathing occur, immediate consultation with medical personnel is necessary. Elderly patients, especially those over 75 years of age, are at an increased risk of fluid volume loss, and caution is required when using this medication. This medication may affect kidney function, so regular kidney function tests are recommended. Additionally, this medication may have a mild impact when driving or operating machinery, so caution should be taken, especially in cases where there is a risk of hypoglycemia. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to avoid taking this medication and should discontinue use upon confirmation of pregnancy. Safety and efficacy in children and adolescents under 18 years of age have not been established. No specific toxic symptoms have been reported in cases of overdose, but appropriate treatment may be required depending on the clinical condition. Lastly, this medication should be stored out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container may affect its quality.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to protect it from air or moisture and is best kept at room temperature between 1 and 30 degrees Celsius. Storing it this way will help maintain the medication's efficacy and safety.
