Blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication helps control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone or in combination with other diabetes medications along with dietary and exercise therapies. If blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy, it may be used in combination with several agents including metformin. Additionally, it is used in combination if sufficient control is not achieved with insulin therapy or other combination therapies. This medication assists in effectively managing the condition of type 2 diabetes patients by improving blood sugar control.
The recommended dosage is 10 mg once daily for monotherapy and additional combination therapy with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents. If well tolerated and additional blood sugar control is needed, the dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily. This medication can be taken regardless of meals. The tablet should be swallowed whole. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered, but do not take double the dose for that day.
This medication should not be used in patients with allergies to the active ingredient or any components of this drug. It should not be administered to patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, nor to patients with severely impaired kidney function, end-stage renal disease, or those on dialysis. This medication contains lactose, thus it should not be given to patients with lactose intolerance, galactose intolerance, or certain genetic lactase deficiency. For patients with compromised kidney function, this drug should be used cautiously, with regular monitoring of kidney function to determine dose adjustment or discontinuation. In patients with mild to moderate heart failure, caution should be exercised, and it is not recommended for patients with severe heart failure. When used in conjunction with insulin or medications that stimulate insulin secretion, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, so insulin doses may need to be reduced. This medication may cause side effects such as hypoglycemia, genital infections, urinary tract infections, increased urination, decreased fluid volume, elevated serum creatinine, etc. If any unusual symptoms occur, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is advised. Particularly, diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious metabolic acidosis, may rarely occur. If symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or difficulty breathing appear, immediate medical attention is required. Elderly patients, especially those over 75 years, are at higher risk of fluid loss and should be monitored closely; temporary discontinuation may be necessary in situations where fluid loss is possible. This medication may affect urination, so patients with bladder-related diseases should consult their doctor. It is recommended that women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant do not use this medication and breastfeeding women should cease breastfeeding while taking this medication. The safety and efficacy of this medication in pediatric patients under 18 years have not been established, hence it is not used in this age group. No specific toxic symptoms have been reported in cases of overdose; however, appropriate treatment is necessary based on clinical status. Keep this medication out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container may not maintain its quality properly. This medication may interact with other drugs, so inform your healthcare provider of any other medications you are taking. There is a risk of hypoglycemia when driving or operating machinery, so caution is advised. Cases of serious side effects, such as limb amputations, have been reported; hence, diabetic patients should pay close attention to foot care.
