Improvement of cholesterol and HDL increase by decreasing cholesterol in hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia.
This drug is used as an adjunct to diet for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia to lower elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol, and to increase HDL cholesterol. It is also prescribed as an adjunctive therapy for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when other lipid-lowering therapies are not effective. In addition, this drug helps regulate lipids in patients at high risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia. Before treatment, other secondary causes should be identified and properly managed, and it should be used when dietary and non-pharmacological treatments have insufficient effects. The efficacy of treatment should be monitored through lipid tests including total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglyceride levels. This drug helps improve dyslipidemia.
This drug is administered once a day, regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, the dose range is 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg daily, with an initial recommended dose of 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg per day. For patients requiring a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol (more than 55%), an initial dose of 10/40 mg is recommended. After starting treatment or adjusting the dose, check blood lipid levels after an interval of more than 2 weeks.
This drug has rare side effects that can cause muscle problems, and severe muscle pain or weakness should be reported to a doctor immediately. Patients who have a risk of renal function issues due to severe infections, hypotension, surgery, or trauma should temporarily stop or discontinue treatment with this drug. Caution should be exercised when using this drug in patients with a history of alcohol abuse or liver disease or those with severe liver dysfunction, as well as in patients at high risk of myopathy. During the course of treatment with this drug, side effects such as muscle pain, abdominal pain, and elevated liver enzymes may occur, and if these unusual symptoms worsen, the medication may need to be discontinued. Regular liver function tests and muscle-related examinations should be performed, and treatment should be stopped immediately if symptoms of liver damage appear. Furthermore, this drug should not be administered to pregnant or nursing women, and women of childbearing age should use adequate contraception. This drug may interact with other medications, so patients must inform their physician or pharmacist about any other medications they are taking. Special caution is required for elderly patients and those with impaired renal function, and it is not recommended for children as safety has not been established.
