Improvement of lipid levels through reduction of cholesterol and increase of HDL in hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia
This medication is primarily used in conjunction with dietary therapy for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia to help reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B, triglyceride, and non-HDL cholesterol levels while increasing HDL cholesterol. It can also be used as an adjunct treatment in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when other therapies have not been effective. This medication has been studied for various types of dyslipidemia, particularly in patients at high risk for atherosclerotic vascular disease. However, dietary management and non-pharmacological treatments should be prioritized, and it is important to identify and treat secondary causes of dyslipidemia first. Lipid levels should be accurately measured before administration, and checks should be conducted regularly during treatment to manage the condition. This medication is effective for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia.
This medication is administered as a single dose once daily, regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, the dosage range is from 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg daily, with an initial dose recommended at either 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg per day. For patients requiring a greater than 55% reduction of LDL cholesterol, an initial dose of 10/40 mg per day is recommended. After initiating therapy or adjusting the dosage, LDL cholesterol levels should be monitored at least every two weeks.
This medication may cause a rare side effect called rhabdomyolysis, which can affect the muscles, so immediate consultation with a physician is required if any severe muscle pain or weakness occurs. This medication should not be administered to patients with certain liver or muscle diseases, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and individuals taking specific other medications. Use caution in patients with alcohol dependence or liver dysfunction, elderly patients, and those with hypothyroidism, as these are at higher risk for muscular problems, and regular testing is necessary. During treatment with this medication, regular liver function tests should be conducted, and if symptoms of liver damage (e.g., jaundice, severe fatigue, nausea, vomiting) arise, immediate consultation with a physician should be made. This medication may interact with others, so it is crucial to inform your doctor or pharmacist of any current medications, particularly when using certain antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, or fibrates. Women of childbearing potential should use adequate contraception during treatment and discontinue use immediately if pregnancy is confirmed, consulting a physician. This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness, hence caution is advised during driving or operating machinery. In case of an overdose, there is no specific antidote, so appropriate treatment and monitoring of liver function and muscle enzyme levels should be conducted according to the symptoms. This medication is not recommended for children, as safety and effectiveness have not been established. If symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, fatigue, or fever occur during treatment, immediate consultation with a physician is necessary to adjust treatment as needed.
