Reduction of cholesterol and increase of HDL in primary hypercholesterolemia (homozygous familial) and dyslipidemia, thereby mitigating the risk of cardiovascular disease.
This medication helps lower high cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, and increases good cholesterol (HDL). Additionally, it is used as an adjunct to other treatments in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia or when other treatments are ineffective. This medication aids in controlling lipid levels for individuals at high risk of cardiovascular disease and should be used alongside a proper diet. It is crucial to check and treat any secondary causes and perform appropriate lipid testing and treatment for the patients who need it. This helps effectively manage hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia.
This medication is taken once daily, regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, it is administered within the range of 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg daily, with an initial dose of 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg recommended. For patients who require more substantial reductions in LDL cholesterol, an initial dose of 10/40 mg daily is preferred. After initiation of treatment or dose adjustment, lipid levels should be checked after an interval of at least 2 weeks.
This medication has been reported to cause a rare side effect called rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to severe muscle damage. Consequently, kidney function may deteriorate rapidly, and immediate consultation with a doctor should occur if severe muscle pain or weakness appears. This medication should not be used in patients with specific diseases, pregnant women, or patients taking particular medications. For example, patients with severely impaired liver function, muscle diseases, and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication. Individuals with a history of alcohol addiction or liver disease, those with impaired kidney function, patients with hypothyroidism, and the elderly should be especially cautious with this medication. These patients may have an increased risk of muscle damage, thus careful consumption under a physician's guidance is essential. This medication can affect liver function, so regular liver function tests should be performed before and during treatment. If abnormalities in liver function are detected, dose adjustments or discontinuation of the medication may be necessary. This medication can interact with several other drugs, so patients must inform healthcare providers about any other medications they are taking. Particularly, the risk of muscle damage may increase when used in combination with certain antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, or immunosuppressants. Women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraception to prevent pregnancy while taking this medication, and should discontinue its use and consult a doctor immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Symptoms such as dizziness, muscle pain, and fatigue may occur, so caution is necessary when driving or operating machinery. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so appropriate treatment should be received based on symptoms, and liver function and muscle status should be monitored. This medication is not recommended for children due to established safety and efficacy not being confirmed, and caution is advised for the elderly regarding the risk of muscle damage, though dose adjustments are generally not required. When taking this medication, it is crucial to follow the doctor’s prescription and instructions, and immediately consult healthcare professionals if any unusual symptoms occur.
