This medication helps to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. Additionally, it is used in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia as an adjunct to other therapies, or when other treatments are ineffective. This medication is used in conjunction with dietary therapy and is administered considering the patient's risk factors. It is important to check for secondary causes prior to treatment and to take appropriate measures. Regular lipid tests are recommended to monitor treatment efficacy, especially for patients with acute coronary event where testing is advised to be conducted as soon as possible. This medication is effectively used in the treatment of dyslipidemia.

Precautions

This medication may cause rhabdomyolysis, a rare side effect that can affect the muscles. As this may lead to renal function issues, immediate consultation with a doctor is required if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs. This medication should not be used in patients with certain conditions, such as those with liver disease or muscle disorders, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those taking specific medications. Patients with a history of alcohol dependence, impaired liver function, and elderly individuals with a high risk of myopathy need to be particularly cautious when using this medication and should regularly assess their muscle condition and have blood tests performed. Liver function abnormalities may occur during the use of this medication, thus requiring monitoring of liver function tests and symptoms. Medication may need to be discontinued if abnormal symptoms relating to the liver appear. This medication can interact with other drugs, so it is crucial to inform the doctor or pharmacist about any medications currently being taken. Caution is particularly needed when taken along with certain antibiotics, antivirals, and anticoagulants. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take this medication, and fertile women should exercise appropriate contraception. Breastfeeding women are also advised to avoid taking this medication. Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established, hence it is not recommended for children. In the case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, and appropriate treatment and supportive therapy should be provided based on symptoms while monitoring liver function and muscle enzyme levels. Symptoms such as dizziness or muscle pain may occur while taking this medication, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.
