This medication is used as an adjunct to diet for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, particularly those with heterozygous familial and non-familial mixed dyslipidemia, to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels, and to increase HDL cholesterol levels. It is also administered to patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when other lipid-lowering therapies are ineffective or require supplementation. This medication must be used in conjunction with a proper diet while considering various risk factors in managing dyslipidemia. Additionally, other secondary causes such as diabetes and hypothyroidism should be identified and treated if necessary. Therefore, this medication is effectively used to treat dyslipidemia and hypercholesterolemia and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Precautions

This medication may cause muscle-related issues, leading to severe muscle pain or weakness, and rarely, it may result in rhabdomyolysis, a serious muscle injury that could lead to rapid kidney function deterioration. Thus, if serious myopathy symptoms occur or if there are conditions affecting renal function, such as severe infections, hypotension, major surgery, trauma, or metabolic disorders, the use of this medication should be temporarily halted or discontinued. Patients with allergies to the main ingredients or components of this medication, those with liver problems or persistently elevated liver enzyme levels without cause, those with muscle diseases, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, breastfeeding women, patients taking certain antiviral agents, and those with lactose intolerance should not use this medication. Caution is advised when used by individuals with a history of alcohol abuse, liver disease, impaired kidney function, hypothyroidism, a family history of myopathy, or previous muscle toxicity from statins, individuals over 70 years old, or in conjunction with specific medications. During treatment with this medication, if symptoms such as muscle pain, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, fatigue, fever, etc., occur, immediate medical consultation is necessary, and blood tests should confirm muscle damage if needed. Liver function may be affected; therefore, liver function tests should be done before and during treatment, and if symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, or jaundice appear, treatment should be stopped immediately. This medication should not be administered to pregnant or breastfeeding women, and fertile women should use appropriate contraceptive measures while taking it. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. Additionally, this medication may interact with multiple other drugs, so if any other medications are being taken, it is essential to inform the doctor or pharmacist, especially when taken with specific antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, antihypertensives, antidiabetics, or fibrates. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote; therefore, treatment and supportive therapy should be pursued according to symptoms, and liver function and muscle damage should be checked. This medication is not recommended for children as its safety and efficacy have not been established, and caution should be taken when used by elderly patients due to a higher risk of myopathy. It is crucial to consult medical personnel if any abnormal symptoms occur during treatment.
