This medication is administered to patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia to help lower elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels, and to raise the good cholesterol, HDL cholesterol. It is also used as an adjunct treatment to reduce cholesterol levels in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication should be used in conjunction with an appropriate diet and is administered when other treatments are insufficient. Patients with dyslipidemia should consider several risk factors and it is important to assess for secondary causes before treatment and address them if necessary. It is recommended to rapidly monitor lipid levels upon admission for acute coronary events and to initiate LDL-lowering therapy before discharge. This medication improves hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia.
