Lipid improvement by reducing cholesterol and increasing HDL in hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet for the reduction of elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels, and for the increase of HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It is also administered to patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia as an adjunct or alternative to other lipid-lowering therapies to control cholesterol levels. This treatment is important for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and must be undertaken with diet and non-pharmacological measures. Before administration, it is necessary to confirm and treat secondary causes such as diabetes and hypothyroidism and to accurately assess lipid levels for therapy adjustment. This medicine helps improve serum lipid levels in patients with dyslipidemia and manage cardiovascular health.
This medication is administered once daily, regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, the dosage range is from 10/10mg to 10/80mg daily. A starting dose of 10/10mg or 10/20mg daily is recommended. For patients requiring a more significant reduction in LDL cholesterol (more than 55%), a starting dose of 10/40mg daily is recommended. Dosage adjustments should be made after checking lipid levels at intervals of at least two weeks.
This medication can rarely cause a serious side effect known as rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to a rapid decline in kidney function. Patients showing severe muscle symptomatology or risk factors such as severe infections, hypotension, major surgery, trauma, metabolic disorders, or failure in seizure control should temporarily discontinue or stop taking this medication. Patients with allergies to the main ingredient or components of this medication, those with severely impaired liver function or persistent unexplained elevation of liver enzymes, those with muscle diseases, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, patients taking specific antiviral agents, and those with lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Patients with a history of alcoholism or liver disease, poor kidney function or hypothyroidism, a family history of muscle toxicity or previous similar drug-induced muscle toxicity, elderly patients over 70 years of age, and patients taking certain medications should use this medication cautiously. While taking this medication, symptoms like muscle pain, muscle weakness, abdominal pain, and elevation of liver enzymes may occur, and if these symptoms are severe, patients should inform their doctor immediately and undergo examination. Also, as this medication may affect liver function, regular liver function tests should be conducted prior to and during treatment, and administration should be discontinued upon any signs of liver damage. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication as it may be harmful to the fetus or baby, and women of childbearing potential should use appropriate contraceptive methods. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established; therefore, it is not recommended for use in this population. In elderly adults, there may be an increased risk of myopathy, so caution is warranted, though dosage adjustments are generally not required. When taking this medication with other drugs, the risk of side effects may be increased due to interactions, so patients must consult with their doctor or pharmacist about any medications they are taking. Dizziness may occur when driving or operating machinery, so caution is required. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote; treatment should be symptomatic along with supportive therapy, and liver function and muscle status should be monitored. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and not transferred to other containers.
