This medication is used as an adjunct to dietary therapy to lower elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia, and to increase HDL cholesterol levels. Additionally, it may be administered as an adjunct or an alternative therapy in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when other lipid-lowering therapies are not sufficient. This medication is particularly used in patients at high risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia, especially when there is an inadequate response to dietary measures and non-pharmacological approaches. Before treatment, it is important to identify other causes of dyslipidemia and treat them if necessary. This medication helps to control the patient's blood lipid levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

This medication is administered once daily regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, an initial dose of 10/10mg or 10/20mg is recommended. For patients requiring greater reductions in LDL cholesterol, an initial dose of 10/40mg is recommended. Blood lipid levels should be checked at least 2 weeks after starting or adjusting the dose.

Precautions

This medication can occasionally cause a serious side effect known as rhabdomyolysis, which can result in rapid deterioration of kidney function. Therefore, if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs, it is important to inform a physician immediately, and caution is needed in patients with muscle disorders or renal dysfunction. Additionally, patients who are allergic to any components of this medication, have impaired liver function, active liver disease, or are pregnant or nursing should not take this medication. Since this medication can affect liver function, regular liver function tests should be conducted before and during treatment, and if symptoms of hepatitis or jaundice occur, use should be discontinued immediately. This medication may interact with other drugs, so discussing with a physician regarding dose adjustments or discontinuation may be necessary, especially for drugs metabolized in the liver or those that may impact muscle. Elderly patients, those with compromised liver function, and patients with hypothyroidism are at higher risk for muscle-related adverse effects and should be carefully monitored. Women planning to become pregnant should consult a physician before taking this medication and should use appropriate contraception while taking it; if pregnancy is confirmed, discontinuation should occur immediately. Dizziness or muscle pain may occur, so caution is advised while driving or operating machinery. Regular blood tests and symptom monitoring during treatment is vital to detect any adverse reactions early and take appropriate measures.
