Improvement of lipids through cholesterol reduction and increase of HDL in hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and dyslipidemia.
This medication is used as an adjunct to dietary therapy to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, especially those with heterozygous familial and non-familial hypercholesterolemia, and to increase the levels of HDL cholesterol. In patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia for whom other lipid-lowering therapies are not sufficient, it is administered as an adjunct to help control blood cholesterol levels. During the use of this medication, it is recommended to maintain a consistent follow-up along with dietary therapy, and it is important to evaluate if there are other causes of dyslipidemia before treatment. This medication may serve as an effective lipid control therapy for patients at high risk of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, this drug is used to improve dyslipidemia associated with hypercholesterolemia.
This medication is taken once daily regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, an initial dose of 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg daily is recommended. For patients requiring a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol (more than 55%), an initial dose of 10/40 mg daily is recommended. After starting therapy or adjusting the dose, lipid levels in the blood should be checked at intervals of more than 2 weeks before further dose adjustment.
This medication may cause a rare side effect called rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to serious muscle issues. Therefore, if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs, it is essential to consult a doctor immediately. This medication should not be administered to patients with certain conditions or those taking certain medications. For example, patients with severely impaired liver function, muscle disorders, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or those taking specific antiviral medications should not use this medication. Patients with a history of alcohol abuse or liver disease, elderly patients, and those with hypothyroidism should use this medication with increased caution due to an elevated risk of muscle problems, and regular check-ups are recommended. While taking this medication, liver function tests should be performed regularly, and if symptoms of hepatitis or jaundice occur, the medication should be discontinued and the physician notified. This medication may slightly raise blood sugar levels, so patients at risk for diabetes should monitor their blood sugar periodically. Additionally, this medication can interact with other drugs, so individuals taking other medications must consult their doctor or pharmacist, especially when used with certain antibiotics, antivirals, immunosuppressants, or fibrate medications. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take this medication, and women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraception while on this medication. Symptoms such as dizziness or muscle pain may occur, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. This medication is not recommended for children as its safety and efficacy have not been established. In the case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so appropriate treatment should be sought immediately at a hospital, and liver function and muscle status should be monitored. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children, and transferring it to another container is not recommended.
