Lipid improvement through reduction of cholesterol and increase of HDL in hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia
This medication is used to lower elevated total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL-cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, and to increase the good cholesterol HDL-cholesterol. It may also be used in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when other lipid-lowering therapies are ineffective or cannot be used as alternatives. This medication is administered together with dietary therapy and serves as an adjunct when dietary measures alone are insufficient. It can be a suitable treatment option for patients at high risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia. It is important to confirm and treat the presence of secondary dyslipidemia resulting from other diseases or medications if necessary, and to monitor treatment effects through regular lipid tests. This medication is effective in improving hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia.
This medication is administered once daily, regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, the dosage range is 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg daily. The recommended initial dosage is 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg once daily. For patients requiring a greater reduction (more than 55%) in LDL-cholesterol, an initial dose of 10/40 mg daily is recommended. After initiation of treatment or dose adjustment, lipid levels should be checked at intervals of more than 2 weeks.
This medication can rarely cause serious side effects such as muscle disorders or rhabdomyolysis. Symptoms can include muscle pain, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, and in severe cases, it can affect kidney function. Therefore, patients with acute infections, hypotension, postoperative recovery, or poor kidney function should temporarily discontinue or stop taking this medication. Patients with allergies to this medication or severe liver dysfunction, those with muscle diseases, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those taking certain other medications should not use this medication. Patients with lactose intolerance should also exercise caution. Alcoholics or patients with a history of liver disease, impaired kidney function, hypothyroidism, elderly patients, and those combining with certain medications should use this medication carefully and may require regular tests following their doctor's instructions. During treatment, side effects such as muscle pain, abdominal pain, and liver function abnormalities may occur, so report any severe symptoms to your doctor immediately. Additionally, rare allergic reactions, skin rashes, and severe liver damage may occur, requiring vigilance. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult their doctor before using this medication and should employ appropriate contraceptive methods while taking it. Breastfeeding women are also advised to avoid using this medication. Safety in children has not been established, so it is not recommended. Elderly patients are at higher risk for muscle disorders and should be cautious when using this medication. Patients with reduced liver or kidney function need regular monitoring. In cases of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so treatment should be symptomatic and supportive, and liver function and muscle enzyme levels should be monitored. This medication has many potential interactions with other drugs; therefore, consultation with a physician or pharmacist is essential when taking it in conjunction with medications that affect liver metabolism or that may impact muscles. Finally, during this treatment, dizziness may occur, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery.
