This medication is used as an adjunct to diet to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels, while increasing HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, especially in familial and non-familial dyslipidemias. It is administered to patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when it is difficult to use other lipid-lowering treatments in conjunction or as an alternative therapy. This medication effectively improves lipid levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia at high risk for cardiovascular disease when dietary adjustments and non-drug therapies are insufficient. It is important to identify and manage secondary causes such as diabetes and hypothyroidism during treatment, and regular blood lipid tests are recommended before and during therapy. When used with appropriate management, it helps to reduce the risk of vascular diseases associated with hypercholesterolemia.
