This medication is used as an adjunct to diet for the reduction of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo B, triglycerides, and non-HDL-cholesterol levels while increasing HDL-cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, particularly heterogeneous familial and non-familial, as well as mixed dyslipidemia. It can also be used in homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia patients either in conjunction with or as an alternative to other lipid-lowering therapies. It is important to administer this medication after identifying and treating secondary causes of dyslipidemia, along with appropriate dietary and non-pharmacological measures. For patients with acute coronary syndrome, lipid testing should be performed upon admission or within 24 hours of hospitalization to guide treatment decisions. This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease associated with hypercholesterolemia.
