Improvement of lipid levels by reducing cholesterol and increasing HDL in patients with hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and dyslipidemia
This medication is used to lower elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels, and to raise good HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. In particular, for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, it is administered alone or in combination with other lipid-lowering therapies to regulate blood cholesterol levels. This drug should be used in conjunction with an appropriate diet and is important as an adjunct treatment when there is insufficient response to dietary modifications. It is also prescribed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in patients at high risk due to hypercholesterolemia leading to atherosclerotic vascular disease. Before treatment, it is recommended to identify secondary causes, such as diabetes and hypothyroidism, and to treat them if necessary. This medication effectively improves blood lipid levels to assist patients in managing their health.
This medication is taken once daily regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, the dosage range is 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg per day. The initial dose is recommended as 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg daily. For patients requiring greater reductions in LDL cholesterol, an initial dose of 10/40 mg per day is recommended. After starting treatment or adjusting the dosage, blood lipid levels should be monitored more than two weeks apart.
This medication has been reported to cause a rare side effect called rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to serious muscle damage. If severe muscle pain, muscle weakness, muscle cramps, or any muscle-related symptoms occur, the patient must inform their doctor immediately. Patients at high risk of muscle damage, such as those with severe infections or post-surgery, or those with reduced kidney function, may need to temporarily discontinue or stop using this medication. This drug should not be administered to patients with certain liver diseases or those with abnormally high liver enzyme levels. Symptoms of liver dysfunction include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, jaundice, etc., and if these symptoms occur, a consultation with a doctor is necessary. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and they should use appropriate contraception during treatment. Additionally, nursing mothers should also avoid using this medication. This drug may interact with other medications, especially those metabolized by the liver or those that may increase the risk of muscle damage, so caution is needed when taking them together. Patients should inform their doctor or pharmacist about all medications they are currently taking. Elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function may be at increased risk for muscle damage when taking this medication, thus regular monitoring is necessary. While taking this medication, symptoms such as dizziness, muscle pain, or abdominal pain may occur, and if these symptoms are severe or persistent, patients should consult a doctor. Dizziness may occur while driving or operating machinery, so caution is advised. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established in children, hence its use is not recommended. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so if overdose occurs, the patient should immediately visit a medical facility for treatment according to the symptoms and undergo examination of liver function and muscle condition.
