This medication helps to lower elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia and to increase good cholesterol, HDL cholesterol. It is also used in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, either in conjunction with or as an alternative to other lipid-lowering treatments, to aid their effect. This medication should be used in conjunction with a proper diet (including limitation of saturated fat and cholesterol), and is administered when non-pharmacological treatment is insufficient. It is important to check for secondary causes such as diabetes or hypothyroidism before treatment and treat them if necessary. This medication is used to maintain vascular health and reduce the risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease.
