This medication is used as an adjunct to diet to reduce total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels, and to increase HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, especially in those with heterozygous familial and non-familial forms. It is also administered to patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when other lipid-lowering treatments are ineffective or need to be supplemented. This medication should be used in conjunction with dietary measures such as limiting saturated fats and cholesterol during the treatment of dyslipidemia, and it is important to identify and treat other secondary causes. It helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases associated with hypercholesterolemia when used alongside overall management, including lipid testing. Therefore, this medication is used to improve blood lipid levels related to hypercholesterolemia.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

This medication is administered once daily, regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, the dose range is 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg per day. A starting dose of 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg per day is recommended. For patients requiring significant reductions in LDL-cholesterol, a starting dose of 10/40 mg per day is recommended. Monitor blood lipid levels after an interval of more than 2 weeks following dosing.

Precautions

This medication helps lower blood cholesterol levels. It can rarely cause severe muscle damage leading to kidney problems; therefore, it should be temporarily discontinued or stopped altogether if there are symptoms of acute myopathy or if there are risk factors such as severe infection, hypotension, major surgery, trauma, or metabolic disorders. Patients with allergy to any of the active ingredients or components, severely impaired liver function, persistent unexplained liver enzyme elevation, muscle diseases, pregnant or potentially pregnant or nursing women, those taking specific antiviral medications, and patients with genetic metabolic disorders such as lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Caution is required when administering this medication to patients with a history of alcohol abuse, liver disease, impaired kidney function, hypothyroidism, elderly patients, or when taking certain medications that could increase the risk of myopathy. If muscle pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, or fever with muscle pain occurs while taking this medication, inform the doctor immediately and undergo examination, and possibly discontinue the medication as necessary. Liver function abnormalities may occur, thus liver function tests should be performed before and during treatment, and if symptoms of liver damage arise, discontinue use immediately. This medication may raise blood sugar levels; patients at risk of diabetes should check their blood sugar periodically. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and women of childbearing potential should use appropriate contraception during treatment. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established, so it is not recommended for use. Elderly patients are at higher risk of myopathy, so caution is necessary, but dosage adjustments are generally not required. This medication may interact with other drugs, especially those related to liver metabolism or those affecting muscles, so consult a doctor or pharmacist if taken in combination with such drugs. There is no specific antidote for overdose, and appropriate treatment and supportive care should be given based on symptoms, with monitoring of liver function and muscle enzyme levels. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and do not transfer it to other containers.
