Improvement of lipid levels through cholesterol reduction and HDL increase in hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and dyslipidemia
This medication helps reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It may be used in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) when other treatments are ineffective or as adjunct therapy. This medication is to be used in conjunction with a balanced diet, particularly a diet limited in saturated fats and cholesterol, for optimal effect. Additionally, when dyslipidemia is present, it's important to identify and treat secondary causes such as diabetes and hypothyroidism. When there is a high risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia, this medication is administered considering multiple risk factors. This medication serves as a crucial adjunct therapy for dyslipidemia treatment by improving cholesterol levels.
This medication is administered once daily, regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, the dosage range is 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg daily, with a recommended initial dosage of 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg daily. If a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol is required, an initial dose of 10/40 mg daily is recommended. After initiation or dose adjustment, lipid levels in the blood should be checked at intervals of 2 weeks or more.
This medication may cause a rare side effect known as rhabdomyolysis, which can impact muscle, so if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs, consult a doctor immediately. Patients with conditions that significantly increase the risk of muscle injury, such as acute infections, hypotension, major surgery or trauma, and severe metabolic disorders, should temporarily discontinue this medication. This medication should not be used in patients with severe allergies to its components, severe liver dysfunction, muscle diseases, or in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Additionally, patients with certain antiviral treatments or lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Patients with a history of alcoholism or liver disease, elderly individuals, those with hypothyroidism, and those with impaired kidney function should use this medication cautiously, closely monitoring for symptoms such as muscle pain or liver dysfunction. While taking this medication, liver enzyme levels should be regularly checked to monitor liver functionality, and if symptoms of hepatitis or jaundice appear, administration should be stopped immediately. This medication may increase blood sugar levels, so patients at risk of diabetes should periodically check their blood sugar. Side effects such as headaches, dizziness, dyspepsia, muscle pain, and fatigue may occur during treatment; if symptoms are severe, consult a doctor. There may be interactions with other drugs, so inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medications, especially certain antibiotics, antivirals, immunosuppressants, and blood pressure medications. Women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraception while taking this medication to avoid pregnancy, and if pregnancy is confirmed, discontinuation should be immediate. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established, and caution is advised in the elderly due to risks of myopathy. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote; treatment should be symptomatic with liver function tests and monitoring of muscle enzyme levels.
