This medication is used in conjunction with diet to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia while increasing good cholesterol levels. It is particularly effective in patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia and non-familial dyslipidemia. Additionally, it is used in the treatment of homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia as an adjunct or alternative to other lipid-lowering therapies. This drug is used to reduce cardiovascular disease risk; however, it is important to accurately identify other causes or risk factors prior to treatment. It is used as an adjunct when dietary and non-pharmacological treatments are insufficient and the treatment effect is evaluated through regular lipid testing. Overall, this medication plays a significant role in managing hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia, thus improving vascular health.
