Lipid-regulating effect through cholesterol reduction and HDL increase in hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and dyslipidemia.
This medication is used as an adjunct to dietary therapy to lower elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels, and to increase HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It may also be administered as an adjunctive treatment in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when other lipid-lowering therapies are ineffective. This medication is recommended for use when considering multiple risk factors in the treatment of dyslipidemia and when there is inadequate response to dietary and non-pharmacological measures. Before use, it is essential to identify and treat secondary causes such as diabetes and hypothyroidism, and lipid testing should be conducted. Thus, this medication helps reduce the risk of vascular diseases due to hypercholesterolemia and improves effective lipid control along with dietary therapy.
This medication is administered once daily, without regard to meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, the dosage range is 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg per day, with an initial dose of either 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg recommended. For patients requiring a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol, an initial dose of 10/40 mg once daily is recommended. After starting treatment, lipid levels should be checked at intervals of at least two weeks to adjust the dosage accordingly.
This medication helps lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, it can occasionally cause severe damage to the muscles, which can lead to a rapid decline in kidney function; therefore, caution is necessary. If serious muscle pain or weakness occurs, it is essential to inform a doctor immediately, and it may be necessary to temporarily suspend or discontinue this medication if such symptoms develop. Patients with impaired liver function or liver disease, muscle disorders, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, and breastfeeding women should not use this medication. Alcoholics or patients with a history of liver function issues, impaired kidney function, hypothyroidism, and elderly patients require special attention when taking this medication. The risk of muscle damage may increase when taken with other specific medications, so any current medications should be disclosed to a doctor or pharmacist. Regular monitoring of liver function tests is necessary; if symptoms of liver dysfunction (e.g., nausea, vomiting, fatigue) occur, treatment should be stopped immediately, and a doctor should be consulted. Additionally, this medication may be harmful to the fetus during pregnancy, so women of childbearing potential should use appropriate contraceptive methods while taking it. Since side effects such as dizziness or muscle pain may occur, caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. Safety in children or adolescents has not been established, so it is not recommended. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote available, so treatment and supportive care according to symptoms should be administered, and liver function and muscle conditions should be monitored.
